When we talk with area kindergarten teachers about what we should be focusing on to get our preschool students “kindergarten ready,” the number one thing that always comes up is social emotional preparedness.  Hands down, teachers are more concerned about this one area of development alone, then they are any other academically focused skill.  Therefore, at MSP we are offering 3 different types of social skill building classes as an extended day option through our Early Intervention Program in order to help all of our students learn and grow to the best of their ability before they head on to the next educational experience.

How can this help my student?

Our goal is to have all of our students leave these groups with increased confidence in multiple areas and ready for the kindergarten classroom!  With an added 2 hours of classtime per day, students will have the ability to really hone these skills, and practice in a safe environment with highly qualified teachers who encourage them to try new things, make mistakes, and learn from one another.  Additionally, it can help lessen the jump from 3 hours of school per day, to the 6+ hours required in elementary school.  By attending for an age appropriate 5 hours, students will feel more ready to make that shift when the fall rolls around!

Quick facts:

  • All of our skill building classes cap at 10 students with 2 lead teacher qualified professionals.

  • Each class is an add on to our morning program, extending current student’s day from 12:00pm – 2:00pm.

  • Lunch time will take place from 12:00-12:30pm with a lunch brought from home, allowing us to focus on lunch time table talk, and transition skills necessary in elementary school spaces.

  • The schedule will include additional outside time and free play, as they provide more opportunities to generalize these new school skills in different environments.  Repetition is the pathway to success for 3-5 year olds, so having this time in the afternoons as well is paramount.

  • Each room will be fully inclusive with a mix of both non neurotypical students and peer buddies – ALL students can benefit from additional practice in these areas and more pointed, guided instruction before kindergarten.

 Classroom Options

Classroom 1: Social Communication Skill Building

This program will specifically focus on how to communicate with peers and teachers through modeled behaviors and scripts, role playing social conflicts, lesson plans on self-advocating in the classroom, and recognizing verbal and nonverbal cues.  It is the ideal environment for our expressive communication speech students, or those friends who excel at asking for what they need and can serve as peer buddies and role models.

Classroom 2: Classroom Rules and Routines Skill Building

The kindergarten experience comes with so many new transitions and expectations.  This program will primarily be working on moving through expected and unexpected routines, and learning the rules of the classroom environment.  Having been at home for most of their lives, all students can benefit from additional support in learning about how to navigate different expectations once they enter into a school setting.  It is the ideal class for our students working on transitions or learning rules and routines, or those friends who excel at classroom expectations can serve as peer buddies and role models.

Classroom 3: Kindergarten Academic Skill Building

Have communication, rules, and routines down but still struggling with cutting, recognizing letters or letter sounds, counting, patterning, sitting for circle time, cleaning up after snack, raising your hand to share, holding a pencil with a pincer grasp?  This is the group for you!  All of the basics needed for kindergarten will be focused on with additional lessons on expectations that will be required of them at the next step.  All of these skills are part of our regular morning program, but will be focused on more intentionally in our afternoon extended day.  It is the ideal environment for our students who may have less experience in these areas, didn’t attend preschool and are starting in a prek classroom for the first time, or those friends who excel at any of the above and can serve as peer buddies and role models.
